This piece comes from noticing small changes, like how my dad smokes differently when he is frustrated. The smell once meant danger, but over time it started to feel like home. I stained the paper with coffee, burned and marked the surface using cigarettes and ash, carved Marlboro into a print block, and drew him mid inhale in oil pastel. The contrast between bright color and a scorched setting holds that complicated shift from fear to familiarity.
